Additional information

Magnesia ad Maeandrum struck coins under Maximinus Thrax during one of the more administratively awkward reigns of the third century — a soldier-emperor who never visited Rome, was despised by the Senate, and whose legitimacy was contested almost from the start. Provincial mints in the Milesian conventus continued issuing bronze for local circulation regardless, the machinery of civic coinage largely indifferent to dynastic turbulence in the capital. Maximinus was killed by his own troops in 238 during the siege of Aquileia, one of five emperors to die that year.
