Additional information

The Γ in the era date — year 3 — places this coin in the early part of Marcus Aurelius's reign, likely 163/164 AD, when Caesarea was still calibrating its civic reckoning to the new emperor. Cappadocian provincial bronzes of this period were struck under the authority of the imperial legate rather than a local magistrate, which accounts for the absence of any magistrate name on the type. The city's mint was unusually active through the 160s, partly driven by the logistical demands of Lucius Verus's Parthian campaign being staged through the eastern provinces.
