Hieropolis-Castabala was a cult center in eastern Cilicia whose coins frequently honored Artemis Perasia, the fierce local goddess worshipped there with fire-walking rituals that drew pilgrims from across the region. Municipal bronze issues under Marcus Aurelius were largely a local financial affair — Rome extended considerable autonomy to Cilician cities in managing small-denomination coinage, and the civic magistrates who authorized these issues left almost no documentary trace beyond the coins themselves.
