Additional information

Odessos, the Greek colonial city on the Black Sea coast of Moesia Inferior — modern Varna in Bulgaria — maintained active civic bronze coinage throughout the Antonine period, striking under provincial authority rather than imperial direction. Commodus's co-reign with Marcus Aurelius from 177 AD, and sole reign from 180, brackets this issue without pinning it further. The ethnic ΟΔΗϹϹΕΙΤΩΝ identifies the issuing civic body in the standard Doric form used consistently by this mint across several reigns.
