| Obverse description | Bare head of the Roman magistrate Potitus Messala facing left, rendered in a provincial Greek style with broad, somewhat summary features typical of Phrygian civic coinage of the Augustan period. The legend ΠΟΤΙΤ ΜΕΣΣΑΛΑΣ is disposed around the portrait in Greek characters, identifying the Roman proconsular official whose name authority sanctioned the issue. The flan is irregularly struck, with some weakness at the edges. |
