| Reverse description | Aphrodite Anadyomene depicted standing facing, nude, raising both hands to her hair in the characteristic gesture of wringing water from her tresses after rising from the sea. A hippocampus, rendered facing left, appears behind her figure, evoking the marine context of the goddess's birth. The encircling ethnic legend ΠΡΟΥϹΑΕΩΝ identifies the issuing civic authority of Prusa ad Olympum. |

| Additional information |
Prusa ad Olympum — modern Bursa in northwestern Turkey — was a prosperous Bithynian city that minted bronze civic coinage under Roman imperial authority throughout the Severan period. These provincial issues circulated locally, filling a practical gap left by the Roman central mint, which produced little small-denomination bronze for eastern markets. Severus came to power through civil war after the murder of Pertinax in 193, defeating rival claimants Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus before consolidating control — the opening year of his reign being the likeliest context for the earliest strikes of this type.
