Reverse description A lion seated to the right in a dignified, heraldic pose, raising its left forepaw to rest upon a tympanum (ritual drum), a type closely associated with the cult of Cybele and with Smyrna's civic iconography. The animal is rendered with attention to musculature and a prominent mane, consistent with the provincial bronze-working tradition of Ionian mints under the Antonine dynasty. The ethnic legend ϹΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ is disposed around the design in the field, identifying the issuing city. A dotted border encircles the composition.
