Obverse description Radiate head of the emperor Caligula (Gaius Caesar) facing right, rendered in the provincial Greek style typical of the Conventus of Sardis. The radiate crown, an unusual attribute for Caligula in provincial coinage, distinguishes the portrait. The legend ΓΑΙΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡ surrounds the effigy in Greek characters. The flan is irregular and the strike somewhat flat, consistent with hammered provincial bronzes of the Julio-Claudian period.
