| Obverse description | Draped bust of Hera facing right, her head crowned with a tall polos decorated with a granular or bead-like pattern, rendered in the local Hellenistic style typical of provincial bronze coinage. The hair is neatly arranged beneath the polos, with visible locks framing the face. The Greek ethnic legend ΧΑΛΚΙϹ appears in the field to the left of the bust, identifying the issuing city of Chalcis in Achaea. The overall style reflects the transitional period between late Hellenistic and early Roman Imperial provincial coinage. |

Chalcis in Euboea was a minor mint under Augustus, issuing bronze provincials that name a proconsul — almost certainly the governor of Achaea — whose identity the partially preserved legend ΛΑΙΟ(Ι)ΝΟϹ ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΟϹ has never allowed scholars to resolve with confidence. The proconsular name remains unmatched in the epigraphic record, which has kept this type outside most standard prosopographical studies of the province.
