Additional information

Nicomedia's title ΔΙΣΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ — "twice temple warden" — reflects a hard-won status granted by Rome for hosting two imperial cult temples, a privilege cities of Bithynia competed for aggressively throughout the second and third centuries. The rival city of Nicaea contested Nicomedia's precedence repeatedly, and the disputes reached the Senate on more than one occasion.
