Reverse description The river god Astraios, the local deity of Metropolis in Ionia, depicted reclining to the left in a languid pose characteristic of Hellenistic river-god iconography. He holds a reed in his extended right hand and reclines with his left arm resting upon an overturned water urn from which water flows, symbolising the source of the river. The ethnic legend ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ encircles the type within a dotted border.
