| Reverse description | The archaic xoanon cult statue of Samian Hera depicted standing facing, rendered in the stiff hieratic style traditional to this type, flanked on either side by a peacock, the sacred bird of the goddess. The statue is shown with arms held close to the body in the archaising convention long associated with the Heraion of Samos. The ethnic legend ϹΑΜΙΩΝ is distributed in the field. The reverse type reflects the civic pride of Samos in its famous sanctuary and the longstanding iconographic tradition of the Samian coinage. |
