Obverse description Draped bust of Julia Domna facing right, her hair elaborately waved and coiled in the characteristic Severan style, secured at the nape of the neck. The empress is depicted with drapery visible at the truncation of the bust. A Greek legend surrounds the portrait, reading ΙΟΥ ΔΟΜΝΑ ϹΕΒ(Α)(ϹΤΗ), identifying her as Augusta. The portrait is rendered in the competent provincial die-cutting style typical of Troas.

Additional information

Ilium — the Roman-era city built over the ruins of ancient Troy — leveraged its mythological prestige aggressively under the Severan dynasty. The city claimed descent from Aeneas and by extension from Rome itself, a genealogical argument that Roman emperors found politically useful enough to reciprocate with civic privileges. Septimius Severus visited the site during his eastern campaigns and reportedly offered sacrifices at the tomb of Ajax.

The Conventus of Adramyteum administered a coastline thick with cities competing for imperial favor through exactly this kind of local bronze coinage.
