| Reverse description | Full-length frontal figure of Athena Magarsis, the principal civic deity of Mallus, standing erect at center. The goddess is depicted holding a spear in one hand and a pair of serpents in the other, attributes emblematic of her syncretic, chthonic character as worshipped at the celebrated sanctuary of Magarsos near Mallus. The encircling Greek legend ΜΑΛΛΩΤΩΝ (of the Mallians) runs around the periphery of the flan. The rendering is characteristic of Cilician civic bronzes of the Imperial period, with the deity presented in a stiff, hieratic stance emphasizing her cultic significance. |
