Additional information

Delphi's civic bronze issues under Hadrian carry particular weight — the emperor visited the sanctuary at least twice, in 124/125 and again in 128/129, and took an unusual personal interest in the Amphictyonic League that administered the site. His interventions in the league's membership and governance were substantial enough to generate lasting resentment among some Greek communities. That the city struck bronze in his honor reflects the transactional nature of imperial patronage rather than simple flattery.
