Additional information

Methymna, on the northwestern coast of Lesbos, was one of the island's five ancient city-states and retained its civic coinage rights well into the imperial period — a privilege not universally extended to smaller Aegean communities. Issues under Commodus from this mint are poorly documented and survive in very small numbers, which likely explains the uncertain ethnic reading in the legend: the question mark on ΜΗΘΥΜΝΑΙΩΝ reflects genuine scholarly disagreement rather than damage alone.
