| Reverse description | The renowned cult statue of Artemis Ephesia (Artemis of Ephesus) depicted standing facing, wearing a kalathos (cylindrical headdress) and the characteristic multi-breasted or egg-adorned garment. The goddess is shown in the traditional xoanon pose with supports at the sides and flanked by two stags, one on each side, referencing her identity as Mistress of Animals (Potnia Theron). The ethnic legend ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ appears in the field, identifying the issuing city of Ephesus. The reverse type is a well-known and recurring civic device on Ephesian bronze coinage of the Imperial period. |
