Additional information

Cyzicus, a prosperous city on the Propontis, maintained the right to strike civic bronze under Septimius Severus — a privilege that reflected both its commercial importance and its early, calculated loyalty to Severus during the civil wars of 193 AD against Pescennius Niger, whose support base lay to the east. Cities that backed the right claimant quickly were often rewarded with continued minting rights.
