| Reverse description | A calathus (basket) depicted frontally at center, filled with grain or fruits visible at the rim, its body decorated with a distinctive lattice or net pattern and flanked by two large ears of grain or foliage extending outward on either side. Below the calathus, two or three pellets appear in the lower field. The Greek ethnic legend ΦIΛIΠΠOΠOΛЄITΩN encircles the design along the periphery, identifying the issuing city of Philippopolis in Thrace. The composition is characteristic of the civic agricultural symbolism employed on Thracian provincial bronzes of the Severan period. |
