Obverse description Laureate and cuirassed bust of the emperor Hadrian facing right, depicted in three-quarter view from the front, with the paludamentum visible at the shoulder. The legend encircles the bust in Greek characters, identifying the emperor by his imperial titles. The portrait displays the characteristic short beard and idealized physiognomy associated with Hadrianic provincial coinage of Asia Minor.

Additional information

Perperene was a minor Aeolian settlement in the Caicus River valley, administratively folded into the conventus of Pergamum under Roman provincial organization. Its civic bronze issues under Hadrian are among the rarest of the regional series — the town was small enough that its coin output was never substantial, and most pieces that survive do so in worn condition from what was evidently genuine local circulation rather than hoarding.
