Reverse description Standing nude figure of Ares, the god of war, depicted facing left in a martial pose, holding a spear in the right hand and a shield in the left hand. The deity is rendered in the classical Hellenistic tradition common to Thracian provincial bronzes, with musculature clearly articulated. The Greek civic legend of Philippopolis as neokoros is distributed around the figure in the field. The overall style is characteristic of the provincial mint output from Thrace under the Severan dynasty.
