Additional information

Buthrotum — modern Butrint in Albania — was established as a Roman colony under Julius Caesar and reinforced by Augustus, who settled veterans there after Actium. The duoviri quinquennales named on this coin, magistrates elected every five years with censorial powers, were a standard feature of colonial self-governance, and their appearance in the coin's field rather than on a surrounding legend reflects a distinctly provincial die-cutting convention. Silvius Graecinus is otherwise obscure, but the iteration marker — Q ITER, indicating a second term — suggests a figure of some local standing.
