Additional information

Nicopolis ad Istrum, founded by Trajan to commemorate his Dacian campaigns, is occasionally confused with this Nicopolis — the Epirote city founded by Augustus on the site of his camp before the Battle of Actium. The Achaean mint struck bronze for local use under Antoninus Pius with notable irregularity, and the alpha with curved crossbar on this piece is a recognized local scribal convention, not an engraving error.
