Obverse description Bare head of Marcus Aurelius, facing right, with short, lightly incised beard characteristic of his early portraiture as Caesar. The effigy is rendered in the provincial Greek style, with curling hair swept across the brow. The circumferential Greek legend ΑΥΡΗΛΙΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ runs around the field, identifying the subject as Caesar Aurelius prior to his accession as Augustus.
