| Additional information |
Carteia, a Roman colony near modern San Roque on the Bay of Gibraltar, was one of the few Hispanic mints producing bronze coinage during the early Julio-Claudian period. This piece belongs to a small group of provincial issues that honored Germanicus and Drusus simultaneously — a pairing that reflects the dynastic uncertainty of Tiberius's reign, when both men were being positioned as potential successors. Germanicus died in 19 AD under circumstances suspicious enough that Tiberius himself was widely blamed, collapsing the succession scheme entirely.
