| Obverse description | Bare-headed or laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Saloninus (attributed tentatively), seen from behind and facing right, presented in the three-quarter rear view characteristic of mid-third century provincial portraiture. The legend surrounding the bust is partially legible and reads ΑΛΕΡΙΑΝΟϹ Κ, interpreted as identifying the subject as a Caesar of the Valerian dynasty. The portrait style is consistent with Ephesian civic bronze coinage of the joint reign of Valerian I and Gallienus (AD 253–260). |

The peripheral legend reads ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ, identifying the issuing civic authority as the Ephesians, and reflects the city's devotion to Artemis as its patron deity. |
