Additional information

Abydus occupied a strategically critical position on the Asiatic shore of the Hellespont, and civic bronze coinage from the city during Maximinus Thrax's reign reflects an empire under considerable strain. Maximinus never visited the eastern provinces — the first emperor in the Principate to remain entirely absent from Rome throughout his reign — yet provincial mints continued issuing in his name as a matter of administrative routine rather than enthusiasm.

The reference VI#3935 places this among the lesser-documented Abydene civic bronzes, a series with thin survival rates owing to the city's declining economic prominence by the third century.
