Additional information

Claudius never visited Judaea, but Tiberias — the city Antipas built on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee — had every reason to court imperial favor. Founded on a graveyard, it was considered ritually impure by observant Jews for generations, and its population remained largely gentile and hellenized throughout the first century. This coin was struck in the final year of Claudius's reign, just before Nero's accession in October 54 AD.
