| Obverse description | Bare head of Augustus facing right, rendered in the classicising Hellenistic portrait style typical of Ionian civic coinage of the Augustan period. The emperor's features are idealised, with a smooth brow and close-cropped hair. The surrounding Greek legend reads ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ ΖΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ, identifying the portrait as that of the Sebastos (Augustus) and attributing the issue to the city of Smyrna. The flan is slightly irregular in shape, consistent with hand-struck provincial bronze coinage of this era. |
