Reverse description A stag standing to the right occupies the central field, rendered in the compact, schematic style common to small provincial bronze issues of the mid-third century. The stag, sacred animal of Artemis and a well-established civic emblem of Ephesus, is depicted with forelegs straight and antlers visible above the body. The encircling Greek ethnic legend identifies the issuing city. The coin's small module and irregular flan are consistent with the abundant minor bronzes produced at Ephesus during the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus.
