| Obverse description | Laureate head of Emperor Nerva facing right, rendered in the provincial style characteristic of Cilician civic coinage. The portrait displays the emperor's characteristic aged features with a wreath of laurel encircling the head. The Greek legend ΝΕΡΟΥΑϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ is disposed around the effigy in the field. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hammered provincial bronze issues of this period. |

Hieropolis-Castabala was a cult center in eastern Cilicia whose civic identity was so thoroughly bound to the worship of Artemis Perasia that the city's coinage functioned as much as religious token as exchange medium. Nerva's brief reign — just sixteen months — produced relatively few provincial issues, making city-struck bronzes from this period thin on the ground. The Castabalan mint was not prolific to begin with.
