Reverse description A cista mystica depicted centrally, rendered as a cylindrical wicker basket with a half-open lid; a serpent emerges from within and creeps to the left, its head and upper body rising over the rim. The cista mystica is a sacred cult object associated with Dionysiac and mystery religion iconography, frequently appearing on coinage of Bithynian cities. The partially legible Greek legend Ν ΕΩΝ appears in the right field, representing a portion of the civic ethnic of Nicaea. The reverse type is rendered in the typical flat, provincial style of Bithynian bronze coinage of the Antonine period.
