Abdera's civic bronze coinage under Claudius occupied an awkward political position — the city had long traded on its Greek cultural identity while navigating Roman provincial administration, and this issue reflects a local mint flattering the emperor through an explicitly Greek epithet rather than Latin formula. The legend reading "Victory of Claudius" in Greek was a deliberate choice, not administrative default. Abdera retained enough autonomy in this period to frame imperial loyalty on its own linguistic terms.
