C. Sosius served as governor of Syria before siding firmly with Antony against Octavian, and his consulship in 32 BC — the year this coin was struck — ended in political disgrace when both he and his fellow consul Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus fled Rome to join Antony's camp ahead of Actium. The island of Zacynthus, positioned squarely along Antony's western naval supply lines, had practical reasons to honor his consul.
Actium was fought the following year, roughly 60 miles north.
