Reverse description A Nile crocodile depicted in profile facing right, rendered in low relief with articulated scales along the body and tail. The regnal date legend L ΙΒ (Year 12) appears above the crocodile in the upper field. The crocodile was a quintessential sacred symbol of Roman Egypt and appears frequently on Alexandrian bronze coinage as a reverse type. The flan is irregular with a rough, granular surface patinated in dark brown and green.

Additional information

Regnal year 12 of Domitian in Alexandria — 92/93 AD — fell during the final stretch of an emperor the Senate would officially condemn within months of his assassination in September 96. The Alexandrian mint, operating under Roman prefectural authority, continued issuing dated bronzes through the end of his reign without interruption, leaving a relatively complete chronological run for collectors to assemble. This piece represents one of the smaller module issues from that mint, where fabric and flan quality varied considerably even within a single year's production.
