Obverse description A honey bee depicted facing, with wings spread symmetrically to either side and a prominent segmented abdomen at centre. The bee is rendered in a stylised yet naturalistic manner characteristic of Smyrnaean civic coinage. The encircling Greek legend ΖΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ, identifying the issuing city, runs around the periphery of the flan. The bee was a longstanding civic emblem of Smyrna, echoing its use on earlier Ionian coinage. The field shows typical irregularity of a hammered provincial bronze.
