Additional information

Year 16 of Trajan's reign coincided with the emperor's intensive preparations for the Parthian campaign — the largest Roman eastern offensive since Mark Antony. Alexandria's mint was under administrative pressure during this period, and small bronze issues like this one served daily transactions in a city whose grain trade made it the most economically vital province in the empire. The mint produced several distinct types for regnal year 16, and low-denomination pieces of this size frequently show officina inconsistencies.
