Additional information

This issue belongs to a brief series struck in 77–78 AD, almost certainly in the eastern provinces rather than Rome — RPC II.1478 places it in an Asian or Syrian mint context. The abbreviation the coin carries refers to the Senate's award of the corona civica, the oak-leaf crown traditionally granted for saving the lives of Roman citizens, here repurposed as dynastic flattery for Vespasian following his consolidation of power after the chaos of 69 AD. The gesture was political theater, but well-worn political theater with genuine Republican roots.
