Reverse description Cybele, the mother goddess, is depicted enthroned facing left, wearing a polos (cylindrical crown) upon her head. In her outstretched right hand she holds a patera (libation bowl), and in her left arm she cradles a long sceptre tipped with pellets. The throne is rendered in schematic form. The Greek inscription ΣΑΜΟ appears above or to the side, with the magistrate's name ΤΕΙΣΙΚ partially preserved in the field, identifying this as a civic issue of Samothrace.

Additional information

Samothrace's autonomous bronze coinage was directly tied to the island's fame as the seat of the Mysteries of the Great Gods — a cult that attracted initiates from across the Hellenistic world, including Roman generals and Macedonian royalty. The island's religious prestige gave it a degree of political insulation unusual for such a small Aegean community, allowing it to continue issuing its own coinage even after Roman domination of the region following Pydna in 168 BC.

The date range itself begins at that Roman conquest, suggesting the series was either initiated or reorganized in its aftermath.
