The Caeni were a minor Thracian tribe whose territory lay in the region between the Hebros river valley and the coast, sufficiently close to the Greek colonial sphere that their coinage borrowed heavily from Hellenistic civic minting conventions while remaining institutionally independent. Mostis, the dynast named on this issue, is attested in no Roman literary source — our knowledge of him comes almost entirely from the coins themselves, which makes the type simultaneously a primary historical document and a numismatic curiosity.
