Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gratian facing right, rendered in a barbarous style with bold, irregular workmanship typical of Germanic imitative coinage. The portrait features a beaded diadem and simplified facial features, reflecting the hand of a non-Roman engraver approximating an imperial prototype. The surrounding legend, reading D N GRAT - IS PF AVC, is crudely executed with irregular letter spacing and some letter degeneration. The field surface is slightly rough, consistent with the hammered flan preparation of a peripheral imitation. Overall, the obverse closely follows late Roman imperial bust types associated with Gratian's official coinage.
