Reverse description The City Goddess (Tyche) of Ascalon stands facing left upon a naval prow, personifying the city's maritime identity and prominence as a Philistian coastal settlement. She holds a military standard in one hand and an aphlaston (the curved ornament from a ship's stern) in the other, emblematic of naval power. An altar appears in the left field, while a dove — a sacred attribute associated with the goddess Astarte, patron deity of Ascalon — is depicted to the right. The Greek civic legend ACKAΛΩ is accompanied by the regnal date AK (year 221 of the Ascalonite era, corresponding to 117/118 CE), both appearing in the field.
