| Obverse description | Bare head of Emperor Caligula (Gaius Caesar Germanicus) facing left, rendered in the Hellenistic portrait tradition with naturalistic curling hair. The effigy is boldly struck and occupies the central field. A circular Greek legend surrounds the portrait, reading ΓΑΙΟΝ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΑ ΓΕΡΜΑΝΙΚΟΝ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΝ ΚΑ, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. The style reflects provincial Cretan civic coinage of the Julio-Claudian period. |
