Obverse description Bare head of Emperor Caligula (Gaius Caesar Germanicus) facing left, rendered in the Hellenistic portrait tradition with naturalistic curling hair. The effigy is boldly struck and occupies the central field. A circular Greek legend surrounds the portrait, reading ΓΑΙΟΝ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΑ ΓΕΡΜΑΝΙΚΟΝ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΝ ΚΑ, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. The style reflects provincial Cretan civic coinage of the Julio-Claudian period.
