Kios sat at the mouth of the Propontis on the southern Bithynian coast, a Greek foundation whose commercial position made it genuinely prosperous during the late fourth century. The city lost that independence abruptly — Prusias I of Bithynia razed Kios around 202 BC and refounded it as Prusias-on-the-Sea, effectively erasing the civic identity that produced this coinage.
The broad citation trail across BMC, SNG Copenhagen, SNG von Aulock, and Waddington reflects decades of scholarly effort to organize a series that survives in scattered lots across European cabinets.
