Thermai Himerensis was founded by the Carthaginians around 407 BC on the ruins of Himera, which they had destroyed following their victory over the Sikeliotai. The city served as one of Carthage's principal footholds in Sicily for nearly two centuries. By the time this bronze was struck, however, Carthaginian power in Sicily had collapsed entirely — the Second Punic War ended in 201 BC, and Rome's reorganization of the island left former Punic-aligned cities navigating their status under the new order.
The CNS 21 type belongs to a late civic coinage phase, issued while the city was adjusting to Roman hegemony but still asserting local identity through independent bronze issues.
