Katane's bronze coinage of this period was produced under Roman oversight following the city's submission after the Second Punic War — Syracuse had fallen to Marcellus in 212 BC, and the reorganization of Sicilian civic coinage that followed placed most eastern Sicilian mints in a subordinate administrative position. Small bronzes like this one circulated as fiduciary currency within a local economy still recovering from wartime disruption and the wholesale removal of art and wealth by Roman commanders.
