Messene's bronze coinage of the early imperial period reflects the city's careful navigation of Roman patronage — Augustus personally intervened in Peloponnesian civic disputes, and Messene's status as a formally "free" city under Roman oversight gave its magistrates unusual latitude to continue issuing civic bronze long after neighboring poleis had curtailed local production.
