Klemens Brosch was one of the more accomplished graphic artists working in Upper Austria in the early twentieth century, and his involvement in the Notgeld program produced some of the most visually distinctive emergency issues of the 1920–1921 wave. The St. Georgen an der Gusen 99 Heller is among the notes he both designed and printed at his Linz workshop — an unusual concentration of creative control that gives the series a coherent artistic identity largely absent from municipally contracted issues elsewhere in Austria.
Brosch died in 1926, still relatively young, and his Notgeld work has drawn increasing attention from collectors interested in the intersection of Austrian Expressionism and ephemeral print culture.
