Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of King Carlos IV of Spain facing right, occupying the central field of the host Spanish colonial 8 Reales. A Portuguese royal counterstamp — comprising the crowned arms of Portugal within a circular die — is applied over the lower left portion of the bust, validating the coin for circulation in Brazil. The surrounding legend reads CAROLUS IIII DEI GRATIA, interrupted by the counterstamp. The date 1805 appears in the exergue of the host coin, and a milled border runs along the rim.
