Bad Salzungen issued this 95 Pfennig note as Notgeld during the severe coin shortage that gripped Germany in the early 1920s. The denomination itself is the real curiosity — 95 Pfennig was not a standard commercial unit, and municipalities issuing at such odd values were typically trying to satisfy exact wage or fare calculations that conventional coinage could no longer meet.
Reineck & Klein of Weimar were among the smaller regional Notgeld printers, handling a number of Thuringian municipal issues during this period. The 1921 date places this firmly in the transitional phase before hyperinflation rendered small-denomination paper entirely irrelevant.
